How Often Should You Clean Your Gutters?

It is one of the most overlooked home maintenance tasks — and one of the most important. Gutters protect your home by channeling rainwater away from your roof, walls, and foundation. When they get clogged, that water has nowhere to go, and the damage it causes can be surprisingly expensive.

So how often should you clean your gutters? The short answer: at least twice a year. But the real answer depends on your specific situation.

For most homes, cleaning gutters in the spring and fall is the minimum you should do:

• Fall cleaning (October–November): After the leaves have fallen but before the first freeze. This is the most important cleaning of the year.
• Spring cleaning (March–April): After winter to clear out debris, check for damage from ice and snow, and prepare for spring rains.

Certain situations call for more frequent cleaning:

You have overhanging trees. If you have pine trees, oak trees, or other large trees close to your home, you may need to clean your gutters 3-4 times per year. Pine needles in particular are notorious for clogging gutters quickly.

You live in a heavily wooded area. Homes surrounded by trees accumulate debris much faster than homes in open areas.

You have experienced recent storms. After a major wind or rain storm, check your gutters for debris even if it is not your scheduled cleaning time.

You have had gutter problems before. If your gutters have overflowed in the past, increase your cleaning frequency.

Neglecting your gutters is not just a cosmetic issue. Here is what can go wrong:

When gutters overflow, water backs up under your shingles. Over time, this causes the wood decking beneath your shingles to rot, leading to leaks and potentially requiring a full roof replacement.

Gutters are designed to direct water away from your foundation. When they overflow, water pools around your home's base, which can cause cracks, settling, and basement flooding.

The fascia boards that your gutters attach to are made of wood. Constant moisture from overflowing gutters causes them to rot, which can eventually compromise the structural integrity of your roofline.

Standing water and decomposing leaves in your gutters create ideal conditions for mosquitoes, birds, and even rodents to nest.

Clogged gutters prevent proper drainage during freeze-thaw cycles, contributing to ice dam formation. Ice dams can force water under your shingles and cause significant interior damage.

DIY cleaning is possible if you are comfortable on a ladder and your home is a single story. You will need:

• A sturdy ladder
• Work gloves
• A garden hose
• A gutter scoop or small trowel

Always have someone with you when working on a ladder, and never lean the ladder against the gutter itself.

Professional cleaning is the safer, smarter choice for:

• Two-story or taller homes
• Homes with steep rooflines
• Anyone not comfortable on a ladder
• Gutters that need inspection or repair
